HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS > Dirt Don’t Hurt

The follow-up to Golightly and Lawyer Dave’s (who inexplicably goes by the Brokeoffs moniker) 2007 You Can’t Buy a Gun When You’re Crying is another 14 track slab of high lonesome, backwoods Americana. Recorded in five days at an analog studio in Spain, the raw quality befits the songs as Golightly and Dave raggedly harmonize like a depression era June and Johnny.Label: TRANSDREAMER

The follow-up to Golightly and Lawyer Dave’s (who inexplicably goes by the Brokeoffs moniker) 2007 You Can’t Buy a Gun When You’re Crying is another 14 track slab of high lonesome, backwoods Americana. Recorded in five days at an analog studio in Spain, the raw quality befits the songs as Golightly and Dave raggedly harmonize like a depression era June and Johnny. Golightly’s simple plucked banjo and wistful voice combined with Dave’s primitive percussion that seems like he’s banging on whatever tin appliance was around, brings earthy insistence to predominantly originals that sound like they could be obscure traditional covers. It’s quite a change from Golightly’s previous retro girl group garage approach but never seems phony or like she’s belatedly hopping the O Brother… train, which by now has long past left the station. It’s an unpretentious set that feels genuine, inspired and soulful, albeit from another era.
