House Star Hugh Laurie Sings The Blues

Videos by American Songwriter

British actor Hugh Laurie recently signed with Warner Music Group to record a New Orleans-inspired blues album. Laurie is best known for his part as the hard-to-love but hard-to hate Dr. Gregory House on Fox’s House. A self-taught musician, Laurie’s character often plays the guitar or piano.

Singer-songwriter Joe Henry, who has produced Elvis Costello and Ani DiFranco, has signed on to produce the album. Although this is his first attempt at a full album, Laurie is no stranger to the music scene. Often making appearances with charity cover group Band From TV, and with a guest performance on the recent Meatloaf album, Laurie isn’t taking the task lightly. “I know the history of actors making music is a checkered one,” Laurie said, “but I promise no one will get hurt”.

Skeptical? So were we. Check out this clip of Hugh’s fingers tickling the ivories with Band From TV.

Think Laurie can jump from Emmys to Grammys?
