Prior to Cobain’s death in 1994, Nirvana was the most popular band on the planet thanks to their 1993 album, In Utero. Consequently, an impending break was in the works and the group was going to relish in their success. Well, and unbeknownst to the masses, during their unofficial break Cobain had survived a near-fatal and accidental h— overdose in March of 1994.
Concerned, Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl called his bandmate and friend to voice his feelings and genuine fear for Cobain’s life. Even though the call was of course in good nature, the words that left Grohl’s mouth are seemingly ones that still sit with him to this day. They would do so for anyone who experienced such a tragedy.
Dave Grohl Calls Kurt Cobain One Final Time
Following Kurth Cobain’s accidental overdose in 1994, Dave Grohl told Rolling Stone about the grave nature of Cobain’s demise. Specifically, he recalled the last phone call they shared before his passing in April of 1994. Grohl told Rolling Stone, “I called Kurt after Rome” and “I said, ‘Hey, man, that really scared everybody. And I don’t want you to die.’”
The date of the call is unknown, though, according to the article, Grohl called Kurt Cobain in March, just a month before his death. They ran into each other again at their accountant’s office, but no extensive conversation was shared. Grohl recalled, “When I saw him at our accountant’s office (in Seattle). He was walking out as I was walking in. He smiled and said, ‘Hey, what’s up?’” Grohl replied, “I’ll give you a call.”
Unfortunately, that call never transpired and Grohl was left with the chilling line he had uttered over the phone. Regarding Kurt Cobain’s death, Grohl told the BBC, “I didn’t really have a plan. When everything’s sort of turned upside down and shaken up like that, you just wake up every day thinking, ‘Who am I, where am I, what am I doing?’”
