Live Video: The Avett Brothers, “The Clearness Is Gone”

Sometime during the past few years, the Avett Brothers officially hit the big leagues. They toured the country, playing arenas instead of clubs. They released albums on major labels, cracking the Top 5 two different times. They earned Grammy nominations. They played the late-night talk show circuit.

Take away the arena gigs and the Grammy nods, though, and the Avetts are pretty much what they’ve always been: a band of Carolina boys who make music for front porches and tent revivals, for down-home juke joints and backyard barbecues, for square dances and basement parties. That’s why it’s nice to see the guys playing this private, intimate version of “The Clearness is Gone” in what appears to be someone’s attic, with camerawork by one of our favorite groups of young, traveling videographers: Live and Breathing.

“We travel around the country to record audio and video of touring bands in unique locations,” says the company’s founder, Justin Glanville. “Our goal is to capture hard-working musicians on a stage away from an audience [or] the pressure of a studio.”
