Nico Vega plays hard rock creatively and melodically and this release might attract a collection of aggressive rockers, despite the genre’s current nadir. Although the band seems unafraid to venture into nu-metal territory (beware the tormented “Million Years”) most tracks consist of controlled freak-outs and tight, hard-hitting breakdowns of the GNR variety, occasionally slowing down to minimal folk chants or tearful ballads. Female singer Aja’s sultry, bluesy delivery reaches for the cheap seats, interacting cleverly with the sound of guitarist, Rich, whose craftsmanship endures if stylistically sometimes nauseating. The least obtrusive track, “Gravity,” is their best, and elevates this disc considerably.
