On This Day in 2008, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Led a Cast of Country Singers in a Movie Based on a Hit Song

On this day (August 8) in 2008, Beer for My Horses hit a limited number of theaters across the United States. The film starred Toby Keith and Rodney Carrington and featured a cast packed with country artists, including Willie Nelson, David Alan Coe, Mel Tillis, and rocker Ted Nugent. The movie was Keith’s only turn as a screenwriter and producer. Michael Salomon, who directed several music videos for Keith, helmed the movie in his feature-length directorial debut.

Keith wrote the screenplay of Beer for My Horses based on his 2003 No. 1 single of the same name. He penned the song with his frequent collaborator Scotty Emerick and released it as the final single from Unleashed. The song topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for six weeks. It also peaked at No. 22 on the Hot 100, giving Keith his most successful crossover hit. The 2008 movie, however, wasn’t as successful.
