Before Johnny Depp became one of the most popular movie stars on the planet, he wanted to be a musician. As a matter of fact, Depp and his band, The Kids, moved to LA in hopes of scoring a record deal. Evidently, Depp’s career did not follow that trajectory. However, while pursuing music, Johnny Depp procured some phenomenal stories, and one of them involves Iggy Pop.

While Depp didn’t make it as a big-name musician, he and his band did score some success. Specifically, Depp and The Kids opened for iconic bands such as Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and The Ramones. Also, Depp and the band opened for Iggy Pop in Gainesville, Florida, and that is when Depp’s not-so-great interaction with the rock star transpired.
A Young Johnny Depp and a Flustered Iggy Pop
Johnny Depp is seemingly no stranger to acting upon his absurd instincts. That being said, when he first met Iggy Pop, one of his musical heroes, he thought it would be a good idea to do something weird, and ultimately, memorable. He recollected his experience on The Graham Norton Show in 2016.
“Just to work up the nerve to say something idiotic,” Depp said that he started to drink, a decision that would weirdly pay off in the long run.
“So he’s walking around with a beagle, I don’t know why, after the show, the lights are on,” stated Depp. “So I thought, ‘I’ll get him .’ And I just started screaming, ‘Iggy Pop! Piggy Slop!’ and a few other god-knows-what. I’m not sure what more rhymes with that.”
Depp concluded his story by telling Norton that Pop “walked over to me with this beagle on a leash, and he got, like, that close to my face. And I’m looking at Iggy Pop’s blue eyes, and he takes so much time, and he just says, ‘You little turd.’ And to this day, it’s one of the best moments of my life.”
After this first interaction, Depp surely thought this was going to be his last one with Pop. Luckily, it wasn’t, as Johnny Depp and Iggy Pop have remained friends to this day and have collaborated on several different occasions.
Most notably, Pop and Depp both acted in the 1995 Western film, Dead Man, as well as the 1990 musical comedy Cry-Baby. Needless to say, Johnny Depp’s first impression might have been foolish, but foolish things are often the most memorable.
