R.E.M is gearing up for a reissue of one of their most popular albums, Green. The album, originally released in 1988, was the springboard for their international musical career. It was the first record from the Athens, Georgia group to garner attention from around the world, with stand-out tracks like “Stand” and “Pop Song 89.” The album went double platinum and trumped the band’s previous albums sales. Years later, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. However, the band called it quits in 2011, after 31 years of making music together. They’re music has been touted for its strong messages of social awareness and has gained critical acclaim across the world. The re-release follows the 2011 40-song greatest hits album, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982-2011.

The reissue marks the 25th anniversary of Green and will be released on Rhino through Warner Bros—featuring a two-disc deluxe edition with the remastered original album accompanied by a disc of live performances from the band’s 130-date Green World Tour. The live set, which includes 21 songs, comes from a show in Greensboro, North Carolina on Nov. 11, 1989. The set will be packaged in a hard clamshell box along with four postcards, a poster, and liner notes from Uncut Editor Allan Jones. The deluxe reissue will also be available the same day on 180-gram vinyl.

A limited edition, five-track EP will be released in anticipation of the anniversary set on Record Store Day, April 20. The exclusive CD will feature live tracks from the Greensboro performance that aren’t included on the two-disc set, with R.E.M. staples like “So. Central Rain” and “Feeling Gravitys Pull.” The special release will be limited to just 2,500 copies and will include an original patch from the Green Tour, recently unearthed from the band’s vault. The Live In Greensboro EP will be available in participating stores for $7.98. To see participating stores, check www.recordstoreday.com

The Greensboro show, spread throughout the anniversary package and the additional EP, features a diverse set with many tracks from Green, early favorites from Murmur, and test runs for new songs like “Low” and “Belong” that would show up later on the R.E.M.’s Out of Time.
