In 2006, Time Magazine dubbed Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Harmer’s third solo album I’m a Mountain “exceptional” and the New York Times singled out “I Am Aglow,” calling it “the prettiest song about deception you’ll hear all year.” But instead of hastily releasing a followup, Harmer seemingly disappeared. Four years later, the golden-voiced singer is back from her “wilderness years,” after taking time away from the music business to support environmental issues in her native land. But don’t expect to hear any songs about tree-hugging.
“I specifically tried to get out of the pastoral, contemplative end of the spectrum and went for a more direct, aggressive style of songwriting,” says Harmer of the new album, Oh Little Fire, due June 22 on Zoe/Rounder Records. The album was co-produced by Harmer and her husband, Gavin Brown, and features backup vocals from Neko Case on the track “Silverado,” and guitar and vocals from Metric’s Jimmy Shaw. I have only heard “captive”, as it appears on her website…. and from that listening this album seems like it may closer in style to “you were here” and “all of our names” as compared to “i’m a mountain”… which is ok with me at this point…
