Single Review: Fiona Apple, “Every Single Night”

Videos by American Songwriter

On her first new song in seven years, Fiona Apple is all over the map, in a good way. The arrangement mimics a music box’s soft chimes, the melody follows its own internal logic, and Apple’s voice flutters and floats like a punch-drunk butterfly. “Every single night’s a fight, and every single fight’s all right with my brain,” she coos, clearly still battling the demons that inspire her to write in the first place.

Apple’s The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do, the followup to 2005’s Extraordinary Machine, is due June 19.
