Single Review – Wilco, “I Might”

Videos by American Songwriter

From the title, we were picturing “I’ll Fight” mixed with the spiritual ambiguities of “Either Way.” Instead, Wilco’s first new single in two years finds the band in a upbeat, “write a song about Wilco” kind of mode. The new track also sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on the first half of Summer Teeth.

To accompany its helter skelter lyrics, “I Might” tacks on a ferris wheel organ, xylophone, a four on the floor beat, shredding guitars and a grooving bass. “It’s alright, I’ve done a lot of crawlin’ around outside” sings band frontman Jeff Tweedy in his trademark ex-smoker’s rasp, also mentioning (we think) “piss and blood,” “solar cars,” and “slim jim pie.” “I Might” lives up to it’s billing, as given by Tweedy, of an “irreverent pop record.”

The single will be officially released on July 19 in both vinyl and digital formats, and will be backed by a cover of Nick Lowe’s “I Love My Label.” Take a listen to it here, and pre-order it here.
