MTV unveiled the ultimate music tool for music lovers, reality addicts and aspiring artists alike: soundtrack.mtv.com, a music guide to all the music featured on the various MTV channels at any point in the day.

Faithful MTV junkies have been waiting for this tool for years. After watching your favorite MTV show, trying to track down that addictive, catchy sound clip you heard used to be an ends-of-the-earth search. Not Anymore. Soundtrack.mtv.com works as an online guide to every sound clip featured on every show on every MTV channel.

The exhaustive catalog allows viewers to check out the songs they’ve heard as well as peruse the artists’ profiles and upcoming events. Depending on how the artists’ want to be displayed on the site, they can upload entire full-length albums so fans can stream entire songs, or choose to provide 30 sound clips and post their music videos, which MTV is licensed to stream.

You don’t have to already be featured on one of MTV’s shows to post an artist profile. Site creators wanted to use the website as a marketing tool, allowing artists to get in some great self-promotion. The site operates on a fan-based ranking system, so if an artist receives superior rankings, MTV supervisors may consider placing their songs on MTV.

As of today, the soundtrack site will also make archives available by date, show and time, so fans can look up last week’s episode of The Real World and find that song they’ve been humming all week. Rhapsody will eventually be linked to the site, so fans can buy the music they preview from Rhapsody’s mp3 DRM-free music store. Viewers will be able to purchase tracks directly from soundtrack.mtv.com. Bravo, MTV. The Hills generation thanks you.
