Starflyer 59 has become one of the most prolific bands from the Seattle based Tooth and Nail roster, and has managed to do so, walking the treacherous tightrope of preserving topical relevance alongside their simplistic musical identity. Dial M comes in as Sf59’s tenth full-length album and finds Jason Martin coping with the tragic loss of his beloved father. Martin’s craft has survived American music’s ceaseless onslaught of fads with formulaically simple arrangements that beckon listeners inward to ponder Martin’s characteristic display of inner-dialogue. Dial M’s sparse retro stylizing is right on par, referencing everything from The Smiths to Henry Kissinger as Martin wrestles with the all too human fixation of desiring control over life’s countless variables.
