The 4 Artists Who Spent Five or More Weeks at No. 1 in 2000

At the dawn of the new millennium, music was changing. Out in large part were the grunge gods of the 1990s and in was a more palatable, let’s say, form of pop music. Suddenly, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were all the rage on outlets like MTV. No longer was flannel the fabric of choice at awards shows.

Here below, we wanted to take a look at the first year of the new decade/century/millennium and see who sat atop the Billboard Hot 100. Who was the rest of the music world looking up at? Indeed, these are the four artists who spent five or more weeks at No. 1 in 2000.

Santana (12 Weeks)

In total, 19 artists enjoyed the feeling of hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000. But it was Bay Area guitarist Santana who garnered the most weeks at the top spot on the Hot 100 that year as his single “Maria Maria,” which featured The Product G&B, lasted at No. 1 for 10 straight weeks. Santana must have known it was going to be a good year, as 2000 kicked off with two straight weeks of him at the top (even before “Maria Maria”) thanks to his single “Smooth” with Rob Thomas.

Destiny’s Child (10)

With Beyoncé at the helm, there is no limit of what you can achieve on the Billboard charts. And in 2000, her group Destiny’s Child hit the No. 1 spot twice thanks to the singles “Say My Name” and “Independent Women.” The latter was the second-longest running single of 2000, staying at No. 1 for seven weeks (it also hit No. 1 again in 2001 for four weeks).

The Product G&B (10)

As noted above, the Santana song “Maria Maria” was a juggernaut in 2000, staying atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 straight weeks. It was the year’s longest-running No. 1 track. And Santana was bolstered by the smooth and compelling R&B group The Product G&B. Thanks to their guest feature on the tune, they share in Santana’s great success.

Christina Aguilera (6)

Pop star Christina Aguilera felt the thrill of landing in the No. 1 spot for the first time in 2000 and she did it twice for good measure. Aguilera’s “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” landed at No. 1 for four weeks and her single, “What a Girl Wants,” topped the chart for two weeks (knocking off Santana’s “Smooth” from the top spot). It was a new world and Christina was at the forefront.
