Watch: Lainey Wilson Was Looking Extra Peckish During Little Rock Show

Lainey Wilson broke through in 2021 with her first No. 1 country single, “Things A Man Oughta Know. Since then, the Louisiana native has become known for her unique style as much as her music. Her trademark bell bottoms are practically a supporting act at live shows. During a recent concert in Little Rock, Arkansas, however, the “Hang Tight Honey” singer traded in her signature style for something a little more… fowl.

“They Say Don’t Take Yourself Too Serious, Right?”

In August, Lainey Wilson dropped Whirlwind, the follow-up to 2022’s Grammy-winning Bell Bottom Country. Her songwriting skills especially shine on the ballad “Counting Chickens,” on which she sings of not-so-patiently waiting for a marriage proposal: Baby maybe cart and horsing ain’t the smartest thing to do / Cause they ain’t even hatched yet but my eggs are in one basket / And I’m loving counting chickens with you.

Performing “Counting Chickens” over Halloween weekend presented an opportunity the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer couldn’t pass up. During a Nov. 1 show at Simmons Bank Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas, Wilson arrived onstage sporting a hilarious inflatable chicken costume.

“This thing is doing its thing,” she said over the cheers of the crowd. “Since I’m wearing a chicken costume since it’s Halloween, I want to play a song on my record that we just put out called ‘Counting Chickens.’

Wilson’s band joined her, dressed as—what else?—” a bunch of eggs.”

“We’ve done reached another level,” the reigning Entertainer of the Year said as she prepared to begin her performance. “They say don’t take yourself too serious, right? Well, this is that, right here.”

And therein lies the true appeal of Lainey Wilson. It’s not just the catchy tunes and impeccable songwriting. It’s the complete and utter willingness to laugh at herself.
