“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey from ‘Escape’ (1981)
Sometimes, when you’re feeling down, you need to be reminded that it’s okay to stop, take a moment, and pick yourself up. Take a deep breath. Have courage. Why? Because holding onto a belief that there is more out there, that you belong, and that you can find your joy is the kind of stuff that fuels the best of us. What is around the corner? What is that light at the end of the tunnel? These are questions we must remember and that we must also believe have answers. Journey’s classic track reminds us with clear eyes and bright vocals that we can’t stop believing in something more.
“Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas from ‘Leftoverture’ (1976)
Sometimes in life, we seek our mentors, such as older folks who have been around the block and who can offer the kind of advice we need to hear on a given day to keep following our dream or to just have enough energy to keep going. This song is not unlike the advice you’d receive from a mentor. The band Kansas gets parental as it reminds the listener to carry on. There will be time for rest later. But for now, pick up your load and carry it to the finish line. It’s worthy inspiration and advice we all need to hear at some time or another, no matter our age or stage in life.
“More Than A Feeling” by Boston from ‘Boston’ (1976)
Hope often requires something tangible. We know there are ideas out in the world that are meant to give us energy. But is there anything else? Well, according to the classic rock band Boston, there is hope to be found in real-life things. And it’s more than just a feeling we know to be true. There are people, places, and things that can make us feel whole and give us a sense that life is worth exploring. With giant riffs and big vocals, Boston takes over and energizes its audience, letting it know that, yes, there is more out there. So, go a-searching!
