3 Songs That Have Become Cringy Over Time
1. “The Power Of Love” – Celine Dion
Celine Dion’s cover of “The Power Of Love” is one of her most impressive vocal moments–though that list is long and full of heavy competition. Nevertheless, what once worked as a touching vehicle of romance has now become something almost too sugary to stand. Though we will always love it, “The Power Of Love” is emblematic of by-gone era when sentimentality ran rampant. We’re far too cynical for that kind of thing these days.
We’re heading for something
Somewhere I’ve never been
Sometimes I am frightened
But I’m ready to learn
Of the power of love
2. “Born To Be Wild” – Steppenwolf
Thanks to a Pampers commerical, Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild” has lost a little of its edge. Though the song was intended to be a manifesto from a group of wild rockers, it now calls diapers to mind. That screams domesticity–the exact opposite lifestyle Steppenwolf likely enjoyed. It still works as a catchy rock anthem, but it’s a lesson in paying close attention to who is using your song and for what…
Like a true nature’s child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
3. “Never Gonna Give You Up” – Rick Astley
Oh Rick Astley…The internet age failed you. Though “Never Gonna Give You Up” was popular upon its release, it has now become the punchline of an enduring joke. The “Rickroll” became a familiar face on the internet–wherein someone would bait-and-switch a viewer with a seemingly normal video, only to play Astley’s hit instead. It has certainly shined a comedic light on “Never Gonna Give You Up.” At least it introduced an entire new generation to Astley and his music.
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
