Chappell Roan is bigger than ever after her Best New Artist win at the Grammys, and everyone wants to get in on the hype. There have been some great covers out there of the other It Pop Girly, Sabrina Carpenter, but what about the love for Chappell? Well, it’s here in spades. Here are just five of the best covers and interpolations of Chappell Roan songs.
Videos by American Songwriter
Sabrina Carpenter — “Good Luck, Babe!”
Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy winner Sabrina Carpenter herself covered Chappell Roan’s runaway hit, “Good Luck, Babe!” for a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance. She initially slowed the song way down, utilizing the bell-like sound of a keyboard and the slide of a pedal steel guitar. Transitioning into the second verse, she ramped it up with drums and backing vocals, letting her incredible voice shine through on the dramatic bridge.
Laufey — “Casual”
Laufey is known for her modern bossa nova pop sound, but for this performance of Chappell Roan’s “Casual” she stayed relatively true to the original. She performed the cover at the Virginia Arts Festival last year, asking the audience, “Do you guys like Chappell Roan?” which was met with loud cheering. It’s interesting to hear Laufey emulate Chappell in this cover instead of turning to her own distinct style. However, her rendition was still beautifully executed no matter what style she was singing in.
Kelly Clarkson — “Red Wine Supernova”
Kelly Clarkson took to her Kellyoke stage during her daytime talk show to spread the love for Chappell Roan. Clarkson has gushed about the young singer on her show before, notably with Miranda Lambert, and used the opportunity to share her music with yet another audience. She took to the stage and performed Chappell’s sapphic hit “Red Wine Supernova,” shocking some fans when she kept in some suggestive lyrics. That didn’t seem to stall Clarkson, though, who apparently appreciates clever wordplay and a little cheekiness.
Orville Peck — “Pink Pony Club”
Mysterious country rocker Orville Peck covered “Pink Pony Club” during a show last year in Nashville, which had fans chomping at the bit for a Chappell x Peck collaboration. His signature baritone took the song to another level and added a new perspective. Fans on Reddit clamored for a studio version of Orville’s “Pink Pony Club,” while others wanted it to become a staple of his live shows. Whether he keeps it in his rotation or not, there’s no denying that he did the song justice with this cover.
Blink-182 — “Pink Pony Club”
While Blink-182 didn’t fully cover “Pink Pony Club,” they did interpolate some of the lyrics into “Damnit” while playing Lollapalooza last year, where Chappell broke attendance records. Before the iconic “I guess this is growing up” chorus, Mark Hoppus took it upon himself to add the chorus of “Pink Pony Club” to the melody of his own song. Somehow, it worked, and the crowd went wild for the unexpected mashup.
