4 Staples From Robert Plant’s Personal Record Collection

Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant is obviously on another level as a musician. And apparently, he has great personal music taste as well. Robert Plant’s record collection is about as impressive as you’d expect from someone who has made legendary music himself, and he’s been pretty open about his favorite singles and LPs from that very collection.

1. ‘Introduce Yourself’ by Faith No More

In an interview with Q Magazine from way back when, Plant gushed about his love for alt-metal outfit Faith No More’s second album, Introduce Yourself. At the time, Plant mistakenly said the record was their “first” album, due to the limited availability of their actual debut record We Care A Lot.

“It’s like, I, ME, listen to this!” said Plant of the album. “And if you don’t like it, f*** off!!! You can’t spend all your life whimpering away about the ex-wife. The vocal attitude, the hard, heavy garage rap, I like very much.”

2. ‘Goin’ Down Slow’ by Howlin’ Wolf

Robert Plant’s record collection includes another special piece of work: The Chess Masters LP from Howlin’ Wolf. Specifically, Plant said he was quite a big fan of the 1961 track “Goin’ Down Slow”. And it even inspired his standards for guitar tracks, apparently.

“[It’s a favorite] because of the guitar outro by Hubert Sumlin,” said Plant. “‘Listen to Hubert,’ I tell my guitarist Doug Boyle. ‘Listen to that finer tremolo on the end of that track.’”

3. ‘Lullaby’ by The Cure

Not entirely surprisingly, Robert Plant is a pretty big fan of gothic-rock outfit The Cure. He’s a proud owner of their 1989 career-altering release, Disintegration. According to Plant, he’s quite a fan of the song “Lullaby”, in particular.

“I love Robert Smith’s beckoning you into his vulnerability,” said Plant. “It’s an interesting little world, like H.G. Wells’s ‘History Of Mr. Polly’.”

That’s a pretty apt description, honestly.

4. ‘Song To The Siren’ by This Mortal Coil

Robert Plant’s record collection also contains This Mortal Coil’s It’ll End In Tears LP from 1984. His favorite track on this particular record is the dream pop band’s cover of the Tim Buckley classic, “Song To The Siren”. It’s worth noting that the cover was released as the band’s debut single and charted quite well in the UK for several years.

“I like the Tim Buckley original too but I’ll go with this version,” Plant mused. “It’s so rewarding to hear it on US college radio.”
