Breakout singer/songwriter Rachel Grae released a new single that proves she’s done settling for less than she deserves in relationships. “Raised By A Woman” highlights the qualities in men that she’s looking for, like patience, compassion, and emotional maturity. Usually, those men are raised by women.

Speaking with American Songwriter recently, Grae opened up about her musical journey, what the single means to her, and how she designed her upcoming concept album like a secret diary.

“[‘Raised By A Woman’] is a thank you letter to the woman who raised men correctly and with manners,” said Grae. “I feel for a while, I settled for less, thinking that that was all that was out there. And thankfully, I’ve learned slowly that that’s not true.”
“And there’s just qualities in specific men that were raised by women that are just more patient, more understanding, just know how to treat somebody properly,” she continued. “So that’s where that came from.”
Rachel Grae Talks About What She Looks for in the Writer’s Room When Creating Songs
Rachel Grae is not afraid to dredge up some difficult emotions in her music, that’s for sure.
“It has to be an open space and a no-judgment space for me to really write,” Grae says. “For a while, I wrote with a bunch of people, and I still do, and I love meeting other creatives. Somebody could say something in a room, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that so relates.’”
“But these guys, Dave Gibson, for example, sat with me before he wrote a song,” Grae adds. “He was like, ‘Not deep enough. Give me more, give me more.’ And we sat there for the first hour of every session and just spoke about the deepest parts of how I felt about the topic we were writing about. And he was sometimes jotting down, sometimes just listening, and it was a genuine conversation, and he’d relate back. So I think that’s what was special is that we all shared our story in it, so nobody really felt alone or that there was any weird judgment, or I’m just sharing something, and they’re just like, “All right, we’re going to write it.’ It wasn’t like that. So it was really nice. It definitely changed the way I wrote.
Rachel Grae’s aim with her platform is to cultivate an authentic experience for her listeners. She has an organic approach to success and songwriting, which includes engaging with listeners directly on social media.
“I don’t care if there’s one listener or a million,” she says.
This authenticity is crucial for an up-and-coming singer/songwriter who genuinely wants to succeed. Fans flock to realness, they love music about the messy side of life, and Rachel Grae cracked open her diary and promised to give them that.
