A Cryptic Social Media Post from Waylon Jennings’ Account Could Signal New Music

Country icon Waylon Jennings passed away in 2002. When he left this world, he left behind a deep catalog of stellar music. Last summer, Shooter Jennings revealed that his father left behind more music than most fans imagined. He reported that he had located several finished full-band recordings and was working on preparing them for release. A recent cryptic post on the late Jennings’ Instagram account could point to that music coming soon.

The post, a video with no caption, appeared on Jennings’ Instagram account sometime on Wednesday (April 30). In the short clip, the camera pans around a mixing board with old photos of Jennings performing or posed with friends and family. One photo features Kris Kristofferson. Another shows Jennings with his wife and Shooter’s mother, Jessi Colter. The video also features a snippet of “A Long Time Ago,” a song Jennings co-wrote with Shel Silverstein for his 1978 album I’ve Always Been Crazy.

Shooter Jennings Hopes to Release a New Waylon Jennings Album This Year

Many of country’s biggest stars have posthumously released albums of new material. Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline had massively successful releases of fresh music after they passed. Several Waylon Jennings compilations have dropped since he died more than 20 years ago. However, a posthumous album of new music hasn’t been released. That will likely change later this year.

Last June, Shooter Jennings took to social media to share great news with his father’s fans. “I’m in possession of a treasure trove of unheard full-band Waylon Jennings multi-track recordings from the ’70s and early ’80s,” he wrote in the lengthy post. “These are not demos, these are not unfinished, but they will take some time to explore, prepare, and mix,” he added. “There will be new, classic Waylon Jennings music in 2025. Stay tuned,” he concluded.

The cryptic post appeared on the late country legend’s Instagram page around ten months after the announcement went out. This could mean that we’re about to get our first look at the “treasure trove” of new music.
