Amy Grant Almost Didn’t Record Her First Duet with Vince Gill

Today, Amy Grant and Vince Gill are a power couple. They truly shine together onstage, especially during their annual Christmas residencies at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. However, the first time they spent any time together was during the recording sessions for the title track of her 1996 album House of Love.

Grant needed someone to sing high harmony on the song and Gill was the man for the job. The time they spent working together helped to strengthen their budding friendship which later led to a relationship.

“I thought, ‘I don’t really think I’m that soulful. I’m not sure if that’s really a great tool in my toolkit’” Grant recalled of her reaction after hearing “House of Love” for the first time. However, her producer Mike Blanton insisted.

“Whatever tools are in my toolkit, to me it’s like if somebody comes into any kitchen and they say ‘We’re gonna make soup,’ most kitchens have the capability of creating soup. Every kitchen’s going to have a different kind of soup,” she explained. “Basically, he walked into my kitchen and said, ‘We are going to create this song magic. And we just worked with what I had available.”

The song turned out to be a hit for Grant. She released it as the second single from the album and it peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. It found more success on the publication’s Adult Contemporary chart where it peaked at No. 5.

While recording “House of Love” with Gill was a big step forward in their relationship, guests probably won’t hear it on the couple’s home stereo.
