Drama comes naturally to Anthony Green. Fans of his alt-emo band Circa Survive know this from four albums and nearly a decade of touring he did with that outfit. But on his previous two solo projects, Green leaned towards a more acoustic based, less busy approach. Still, his distinctive high pitched voice and ability to write melodies that are never predictable provides a sure sense of emotional catharsis regardless of the musical setting.

His newest ratchets that up considerably. It was recorded in his home state of Pennsylvania with producer/engineer Will Yip who deserves credit for making a small three piece backing combo named Good Old War sound about four times larger. Songs such as “Shine” with its interlocking harmony, thumping, rhythmic percussion and cascading guitars will instantly fill any room with sound. The album’s first single, “Breaker” creates a unique sonic world led by Green’s impassioned vocals and layered keyboards that seem to be cosmically treated.  Even the lighter, reggae beats of “Anytime” resonate with heavy reverb and a grandiosity accentuated by Green’s often overdubbed voice.

A few solo, acoustic tunes like “Conversation Piece” act as a breather from the fuller sound that dominates this disc, but don’t vibrate with the force that makes the rest so fiery, passionate and intense. It’s a logical extension of Green’s work with the impressive Circa Survive and a perfect introduction to those new to his substantial and sublime talents.
