Barenaked Ladies fans, take a deep breath. The band will soldier on, despite the departure of Steven Page, co-founder Ed Robertson tells Billboard.com.

According to Robertson, the band are currently writing new songs, and will enter the studio in April to record an album they hope to release this fall.

“There are still four writers and singers and four multi-instrumentalists in Barenaked Ladies, so there’s a lot to draw on going forward,” he states.

As for Page, the singer explained his departure from BNL to the AP, claiming diminished songwriting opportunities helped lead to the split.

“Frankly, the band itself was a five-way democracy and one of the great things about it is that it’s been about the five-way collaboration, but it’s also one of the things that’s made me decide to be a solo artist,” said Page.

“I will miss being a Barenaked Lady like crazy, but there are lots of other things I’m really looking forward to,” he said. “No one’s going anywhere. I’m going to continue to make music and those guys are going to continue to make music as well. I think it will be good for everybody.”

“Steve still has our support, and always will have it,” Robertson says. “We’re still intrinsically tied together both logistically and emotionally. I think you’re going to see great things from Steve.”

There’s also a Barenaked Ladies box set in the works, due this year, to celebrate the band’s 20th Anniversary.

  1. There is a very important sentence or two missing from the article. I have gone ahead and adding the missing and super implied subtextual sentence:

Also, he was arrested for doing blow. They lost a big Disney gig from this, and it greatly complicates international travel and potential to tour. Plus, being on blow, he had probably become an intolerable person.

  2. Um since when did one member using coke cause rock bands to break up? Also, canceling a Disney show? BFD.

I’m sad Steve left, too, but let’s be realistic here. He’s not the first rock star to use drugs and he’s not gonna be the last.
