“I am contemplating the last twelve years with Pope Francis,” she wrote. “Though not a Catholic, I was drawn to this kind, open-minded, and staunch humanitarian. I felt safer knowing he was among us, doing his best to follow and preach Christ’s teachings. It is fitting that his last words to the public should strongly focus on Peace.”
The song “These Are The Words” was included on the soundtrack for the documentary. Smith wrote the song with songwriter and band member Tony Shanahan. It’s a simple piano and guitar composition featuring Smith’s strong yet tender vocals.
The Important Message Behind Patti Smith’s “These Are The Words”, Written for Pope Francis
The late pope made history as the first pontiff from Latin America and as the first Jesuit pope. He cared deeply for those in need, generally showed acceptance of the LGBTQ community, and supported Palestine. In this way, the lyrics to “These Are the Words,” performed with emotion and heart, feel like they could have come from Pope Francis’ mouth.
“When the soul yearns for love / It comes flowing from above / Mercy, hope, humility / These are the words to live by every day,” Smith sings in the chorus, which is then repeated. “Walls will crumble, we arise / To work as one, abide, provide / Mercy, hope, humility / These are the words we whisper in our sleep.”
“These Are the Words” is a vulnerable yet powerful song about supporting others and being thankful for community. In a time where people are more isolated than ever, it’s an important reminder that humans work better together. We’re social creatures. Not all support can come only from within, and there’s nothing wrong with reaching out to others.
In memory of Pope Francis, it’s a reminder of the work he did during his 12 years as pope. While the Catholic Church can often be a regressive institution, Pope Francis was more or less a progressive pope. He often spoke of acceptance for all and the importance of community. However, like all human beings, he was also flawed. He held some opinions that were not so progressive, such as his stance on families.
Still, Pope Francis will remain a crucial figure for everyone who believes in peace, equality, and community. As the song states, “Awake everyone, the time has come / To mend, to tend, our common home / To give our thanks, sow our seeds / Extend the hand to those in need.”
