I was poking around Hulu last night when I found something that I never knew existed. Apparently, some time in the late 90s, the folk duo Aztec Two-Step, one of my longtime favorites, shot a documentary about their gentle rise and drawn-out fall. It’s called No-Hit Wonder: The Aztec Two-Step Story, and it’s great.

The band’s sound can best be described as Simon and Garfunkel on steroids. Spine-tingling harmonies, brilliant guitar playing, and poignant lyrics about the Beat Generation and Humpty Dumpty. Originally shot for Connecticut public television, the documentary charts their their trials and travails from the coffee houses of Boston to the wilds of Central Park to the halls of Elektra Records and beyond.

When No-Hit Wonder was filmed, the band were semi-retired. Today, they’ve refound their mojo, releasing an album of Simon and Garfunkel covers in 2008, and a career retrospective of their wonderful songs in 2009, titled The Persecution and Resurrection of Aztec Two-Step.

Enough talking. Enjoy the movie.
