Carrie Underwood is one of the biggest stars in modern country music. She also has one of the best and most consistent voices in the genre. Whether she’s singing live or in the studio, her voice is instantly recognizable. As a result, she needs to make sure that she protects her voice to stay in top vocal form.

Last year, Underwood performed at the Carolina Country Music Festival in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While there, she spoke to Rissi Palmer for CMT’s Hot 20. During their conversation, she revealed what she does to ensure that her voice is protected.
Carrie Underwood on Taking Care of Herself and Protecting Her Voice
Rissi Palmer complimented Carrie Underwood on her vocal consistency and asked what she does to protect her voice. “I feel like, first and foremost, just taking care of myself overall is like the most important thing I could do,” Underwood said. Then, she expanded on that. “With food and drink and being healthy and exercising and all that stuff. I feel like that’s really the main thing that I do,” she explained.
While she does many things to make sure she can put on a great show every time she steps on a stage, Underwood knows she isn’t perfect. “I’m pretty bad at everything else. I’m bad with like warm-ups and cool-downs and I’ll drink caffeine and do my thing because caffeine. I’m a mom,” she added with a laugh.
Underwood went on to say that vocal consistency is important to her not just because she wants to give her fans the shows they deserve but also because it’s what she expects from other artists. “I think it’s important. When I go hear somebody sing and they don’t really sound like they’re supposed to sound, I’m disappointed,” she explained. “So, I feel like that’s important for me as a fan so it’s important for me as an artist,” she added.
However, she does allow herself some wiggle room onstage. “I’ll play a little bit with melodies but I kind of want to be what people would want to hear,” she said.
