Nickel Creek/Punch Brothers member Chris Thile raised nearly $28,000 for music scholarships at Murray State University with his Thursday night performance at the college.

The endowment will be used by Thile’s alma mater, which is located in Murray, Kentucky, to start a permanent scholarship fund to recruit music students from across the country, many of which are first-generation college students, according to university officials
“Chris recognizes that many Murray State music students are first-generation college students who deeply desire an opportunity for an education in music but whose families struggle to find the financial means to bring their dreams to reality,” said Tina Bernot, Murray State’s interim director of the office of development.
Aside from his charitable efforts, Thile has been busty touring with the Punch Brothers, as well as some solo some dates. It was announced earlier this year that he will take over as the host of the radio show A Prairie Home Companion for the 2015-2016 season.
