Glenn Danzig Says Recording New Albums is a Bad “Business Model” for Misfits, Solo Project

Glenn Danzig, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, and Jerry Only–the original Misfits lineup–reunited for the first time in three decades in 2016. Since then, the band has played a handful of shows. Additionally, Danzig continues to perform with his solo project. However, fans who are hoping for new music from either outfit should probably lower their expectations.

In a recent interview with Abe Kanan of 98 Rock Radio, Danzig shared his thoughts on the Misfits reunion and shared his plans for the future. Those plans don’t include new albums, though.

Glenn Danzig Says New Solo or Misfits Albums Aren’t in the Cards

Abe Kanan asked Glenn Danzig if a new Misfits album was in the works. “Maybe a song,” the legendary frontman said. “Not an album,” he added. For longtime fans of the band, any new material, whether it’s a new song or a new album, is welcomed. However, the “Mother” singer offered a less hopeful answer when asked if he would release a new solo album.

”No,” Danzig stated with a laugh. “Look, people now just wanna download your stuff for free, and they don’t understand that it costs money to go in a studio and record a record. So, it’s not really a great business model to go record a record and then not be able to recoup your money that you spent making the record,” he explained. “So, with Danzig, it might be like the Misfits–maybe I’ll record a song or two and release it, and it won’t cost that much,” he added.

This model, he pointed out, is one that the Misfits followed in the early days. “In the beginning, the Misfits only released singles. We couldn’t afford to put out an album. But a lot of the punk bands, that’s how it was. You couldn’t afford to do an album, especially if you were underground,” he recalled. “Maybe I’ll do that for Danzig, and maybe we’ll do it for the Misfits. We’ll see,” he added.

The Misfits released a handful of singles before finally gaining enough momentum to put together their first full-length album. Between 1977 and 1981, they released “Cough/Cool,” “Bullet,” “Horror Business,” and “Night of the Living Dead,” and “Halloween” before releasing Walk Among Us in 1982. They also released a pair of EPs during that time–Beware (1980) and 3 Hits from Hell (1981). Danzig left the band in 1983.

Glenn Danzig released his self-titled debut solo album in 1988. His most recent release came last fall in the form a single titled “Black Hell.”
