Lady A‘s Charles Kelley and his wife Cassie had a one percent chance of conceiving a baby without fertility intervention, a specialist told them about a decade ago.
After taking a break from fertility attempts, the couple was surprised when Cassie found out she was pregnant. They welcomed their son Ward, 9, in 2016.
On Tuesday, they revealed Ward was going to be a big brother. No one is more shocked than the Kelley family.
“Biggest surprise of our lives!” Cassie shared on social media along with a series of family pictures. “Baby Kelley coming early fall 2025 🍼👶🏻🤰🏼 Big brother is the MOST excited 💛💛💛”

Baby Kelley Coming Early Fall
Cassie later said that she even wondered if her pregnancy symptoms were signs of perimenopause. Her trainer suggested she take a pregnancy test. The couple took time to digest their unexpected addition but couldn’t be happier.
“It’s all been an interesting thing to wrap my head around,” Charles told American Songwriter. “But we’re just trying to enjoy the moment of it all. Obviously, with a little bit of an older pregnancy, you worry, and we’re still keeping an eye on it all. But everything seems really good so far. Everything seems healthy.”
Baby Kelley’s timing comes at a time of new beginnings for the family. Charles has been on a life-changing sobriety journey since a fateful trip to Greece forced him to reevaluate his life. The couple was on the trip with eight of their friends when Charles and Cassie had an argument. Charles told his wife he was tired of being told what to do, turned off his phone, went drinking with strangers, and was gone all night. Their friends helped Cassie look for him.
Charles Kelley Flew From Greece to Rehab
He returned the next morning. Cassie told him he needed help, had to deal with his issues, and that she was meeting a divorce attorney when they got back to Nashville. Charles contacted his manager and flew to rehab from Greece.
Cassie visited Charles in rehab and learned that alcoholism is a family disease. She would have to work on herself, too. The idea initially upset her because she hadn’t done anything wrong. However, she endured because she loved Charles and didn’t want Ward to have to split his time between his parents.
In part because of the circumstances, the Kelleys hadn’t tried for a baby in four or five years. Charles said they ruled out expanding their family and stopped thinking about it.
“It’s like, ‘Oh shit,’” he laughed. “We were kind of like settling into our family and thought it was complete. Then it was like, ‘Oh gosh. Okay, well, we can do this.’”
Sobriety Allowed Charles Kelley Another Opportunity to be a Parent
The Kelley family unit is now strong and ready for its new addition.
“I’m just trying to enjoy the moment of it all,” he said. “Not a cheesy way, but it really does feel like this is God’s timing. Without sobriety, I probably wouldn’t have saved my marriage, which wouldn’t have given us this chance – another opportunity to be a parent. It’s an interesting, interesting journey, all of it.”
