According to news reports, a laser show at a Russian music festival injured more than 30 people on July 5th. At the Aquamarine Festival in Moscow, some concertgoers lost up to 80 percent of their vision after the demonstration. Twenty of those injured have required treatment in Moscow hospitals.

“It is a deterioration in the sharpness of the eyesight, not a burn,” noted Elena Grishina, head doctor at the Moscow Ophthalmological Hospital. She could not confirm reports that lasers caused the injury. Unpleasant treatment has followed unpleasant injury, according to Dr Grishina. “It involves a lot of needles, but all patients are in optimistic spirits, and we are hoping for a good result.”

Concertgoers claim that a dance floor at the festival was covered by a canopy due to rain. The lasers were pointed horizontally under the tent instead of into the sky, which led to the injuries, according to reports.

During the summer, techno music fans often organize open-air raves on empty fields outside of Moscow, but regulations aren’t often respected. A representative of the Vladimir regional government said the festival was organized illegally and put on without proper permits, and injured concertgoers plan to take legal action against the festival’s organizers, according to NTV television.

A tough lesson learned at what sounds like a Tool show gone horribly wrong…
