Videos by American Songwriter

On Sunday, Osama bin Laden, leader of the reviled terrorist group Al Qaeda, was killed by American forces. The Twitterverse was abuzz with the news, with several prominent musicians tweeting their reactions in real time.

Country star Blake Shelton had a slew of tweets:

– Re-writing my fav Woody Guthrie song. This land ain’t your land This is land our land So take a dirt nap So long Bin Laden

– Re-writing my fav Sister Sledge song.. We are family So lay down Bin Laden and bleed We are family Get up everybody sing

– Re-writing my fav Georgia Satillites song Bin Laden now baby We’re not here for wealth Kiss your ass goodbye I’ll keep your head for myself.

– Hey Toby!!!!! We finally put the boot in that ass!!!!!

Patriotic country artist Toby Keith (“The Taliban Song,” “Courtesy Of The Red White And Blue”) was a trending topic on Twitter. A popular Twitter message readToby Keith just wrote two albums in the last hour.” Interestingly, Keith, who is currently on a USO tour in the Middle East, has been silent on the subject so far.

But he did write this:

– 4 mortars hit close as I was about 2 take stage last night – we had to hunker in a bunker til all clear.

“Support the troops” tweets were also popular.

Like Snoop Dogg’s:

– Bring the soldiers bac home asap! They r missed! We love how they fight for us now let’s fight for them!!

Or Brad Paisley’s:

If you see someone in a military uniform tomorrow, for heaven’s sake give them a hug. Or a drink. Or a new car.

Funnyman Eugene Mirman wrote:

– I wonder if they’re not releasing photos of Osama because they’res a 2% chance they actually killed the lead signer of a jam band?

Others, like singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer, were somber:

– A moment in the kitchen; remembering those who died on sept 11 & not taking any joy in the news.

Lady Gaga added her own spin on things:

– Just landed. Watching CNN, what a historical moment in the fight against hatred.

And Katy Perry wrote:

– I believe in justice… but don’t u think that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind? ☹ #revolutioncomesthroughlove #worldpeace

Indie artist Jason Isbell said what many of us were thinking:
– Not ignoring CNN now. Wow. I hate to be happy about a death, but I gotta admit, I’m grinning.

The Roots’ Questlove kept it civil:

– Hope those rejoicing can hear O’s words that to engage in anti Islam/Muslim rhetoric is missing the point

Then followed up with a well-timed joke:

– So did Trump say he wanna see the death certificate now?
