Great Artists to Watch This Year, From a U.K. Alternative Band to a Country Rock Duo

Sports Team

Coming off their 2022 album Gulp!, Sports Team is gearing up for their third album Boys These Days, due out on May 23. This dynamic and sometimes chaotic band has gained viral fame in the U.K., and they’re setting their sights on a breakout in the U.S. This, despite the fact that they were robbed at gunpoint in California while on tour this past December. Sports Team has already released two singles, “I’m In Love (Subaru)” and “Condensation.” Both take a unique approach to cool British indie rock. They’ve just released their newest single, “Bang Bang Bang,” which cleverly and sharply approaches gun culture in America.

Taxidermists

Massachusetts-based duo Taxidermists—Cooper B. Handy and Salvadore McNamara—are definitely artists to watch. They have just announced their newest album, 20247, will release on March 7. They describe the first single, “Shoot,” as a “conceptual representation of a late night in a beach town.” The album as a whole will be a snapshot of Handy and McNamara’s friendship, which blossomed on MySpace in 2007 when they were pre-teens. Since then, they’ve made music the way they want to—with frenetic energy and lots of love.

New Translations

Nashville-based alternative band New Translations has just released a new single from their upcoming debut LP, Vacation, out on February 14. “Coldest Century” opens with a steady bassline and vocals that alternate from falsetto on the line “just thinking about you and me” to melancholy baritone on the verses. It’s introspective, nostalgic, and creates a sense of wintertime yearning.

Tobacco City

Other artists to watch, Tobacco City has announced their newest LP, Horses, as well as dropped the first single from the album, “Autumn.” It’s a warbling country rock tune from the Chicago duo of Lexi Goddard and Chris Coleslaw, who often craft absurd verses to bookend hard-hitting choruses. The song evokes nostalgia for a simpler time, the carefree and sometimes stupid acts of youth, and living without consequences. Overall, the album offers a throwback 70s sound that bolsters the lyrical imagery. Horses is available for pre-save now.
