Picture this: it’s Valentine’s Day, and you’ve got a crush. Butterflies, giggling, laying on your stomach and kicking your feet in the air while you draw hearts around their name in your diary, the whole nine yards. If you’re hanging out with your crush today and you don’t know what music to put on to set the mood, might I suggest the following playlist of subliminal messages to get your crush to think romantic thoughts about you without even knowing it?

Romantic Valentine’s Day Music For Subliminal Messaging, But Not in a Weird Way
“Lovers Rock” — TV Girl
We’re going to start with TV Girl’s “Lovers Rock” for this Valentine’s Day playlist. As we continue, the songs will get more and more obvious, but “Lovers Rock” is the perfect about of subliminal mixed with explicitly romantic to start us off. The line, “and if she grabs for your hand and drags you along / she might want a kiss before the end of the song” should help plant the seed of romance in your crush’s brain. But if that doesn’t do it, keep the playlist going.
“Washing Machine Heart” — Mitski
Ah, Mitski, the queen of sad lover girls. Her music is great for everyone, but specifically everyone with a yearning crush. “Washing Machine Heart” starts out with strong imagery (“toss your dirty shoes in my washing machine heart / baby bang it up inside”) and keeps getting stronger (“do mi ti / why not me? / why not me?”). A great Valentine’s Day song for yearning and longing, put this one on second and let the subliminal messaging evolve.
“Lovesong” — The Cure
Next up, there’s the line “Whenever I’m alone with you / you make me feel like I am home again,” which may feel like it’s coming off a bit strong initially, but we’re talking about love here. You need a song to let your crush know how you feel about them, instead of subliminally asking them to kiss you. Balance in all things, after all, but especially in love. While the first two songs are generally lighter, “Lovesong” is slightly heavier (“whatever words I say / I will always love you”) but it leads well into our next song.
“Fall In Love With Me” — Iggy Pop
Imagine that you’re hanging out with your crush, you’re both blushing and giggling at each other, and then “Fall In Love With Me” by Iggy Pop comes on. “And how I wish you would / fall in love with me” is the ultimate subliminal message to put on in the background. Pause, look into their eyes, and let this song play out its repetition: “I wish you would / fall in love with me.”
“I Really Like You” — Carly Rae Jepsen
This is the perfect song for a crush when you like them a lot but it’s not quite love yet. It’s also a little on the obvious side, so pull this one out of your hat when the subliminal messages aren’t doing the trick. Perhaps your crush is a bit oblivious and they need things spelled out for them. There’s nothing more obvious than Carly Rae Jepsen singing “I really really really really really really like you / and I want you, do you want me, do you want me too?”
