Mariah Carey (14)

Upon close examination, the 1990s belonged to Mariah Carey. While people like Madonna and Whitney Houston had four No. 1 hit songs, it was Carey who boasted an incredible 14 No. 1s. She had more top songs than there were years in the decade—and then some. With smashes that include “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Someday,” “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” “Emotions,” “I’ll Be There,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Honey,” “My All,” and “Heartbreaker,” Carey owned the 1990s and it’s not even close.

Janet Jackson (6)

Second during the decade is Janet Jackson. She landed a half-dozen No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 during the decade. The sultry pop star, who like Carey remains part of the cultural zeitgeist, seemed to have a hit song every other year. It’s what helped build such a strong foundation that Jackson can continue to tour big arenas today. During the 1990s, she scored No. 1 spots thanks to songs like “Escapade,””Black Cat,” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “That’s The Way Love Goes,” “Again,” and “Together Again.”

Boyz II Men (5)

The bronze medal for the most No. 1 hit songs in the 1990s goes to the Philadelphia-born harmonious R&B group Boyz II Men. The outfit not only made audiences swoon, but they were able to achieve almost unparalleled success doing so. The smooth, sweet-sounding group scored songs in the top spot thanks to tracks like “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bended Knee,” “One Sweet Day” (with icon Mariah Carey), and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.”
