Watch the Magical “Stand Back” Performance Stevie Nicks Delivered 41 Years Ago on ‘Saturday Night Live’

While Saturday Night Live looks to celebrate its 50th season, creator Lorne Michaels promised the show would take a moment to honor its history on television. And although Ariana Grande will host tonight’s episode, she will not be the musical guest for the evening. Given that Grande is hosting, SNL decided to welcome back the legendary Stevie Nicks. Marking her return to SNL in over 40 years, the singer recently recalled her first performance and the stress surrounding the show.

Taking a trip back to 1983, fans watched as Nicks took the stage at SNL to perform “Stand Back” and “Night Bird.” Although taking place over 40 years ago, the performance made its way online, giving fans a glimpse into the past. Commanding the stage, Nicks continued to gain praise from fans as they wrote, “I remember watching this! Big Stevie fan!” Another person added, “Love Stevie so much. What an incredible voice she has.”

Stevie Nicks Recalls Stressful Time On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Outside of fans being able to watch the throwback performance, Nicks also discussed her first time on SNL with People and how stressful the moment was. “You know, we practiced and practiced, and everything went well. At the time, I had my friend who wrote ‘Stand Back,’ and she was gonna do the second song, which was called ‘Nightbird’ — and she freaked out and had terrible stage fright, so she couldn’t do it.”

Needing to find a solution fast, Nicks gained support from her sister-in-law, Lori Perry. “So one of my singers, who ended up being my sister-in-law Lori, she said, ‘I’ll do it,’ and she’s crazy, but she said, ‘I’ll do it. This is literally right before we went on, and so we went on and we did it, and it came out perfect!”

While her debut on SNL came with a few hiccups, Nicks considered the performance beautiful and insisted, “I’ve never been so proud of anything as I was of that night. It was a magical show, and I was thrilled, and it definitely kicked my solo career up.”

Don’t miss the Nicks return to SNL, airing tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and available to stream on Peacock.
