Where Are They Now? Macy Gray

Macy Gray was one of the voices of a generation with her distinct, smoky vocals, particularly on her signature hit, “I Try.” The song won her Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2001 Grammy Awards where it was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It charted across the world in multiple countries, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 and Top 40 Tracks charts.

It also reached the pinnacle position in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, certifying it as the biggest single in her career. Despite releasing a total of 10 albums thus far, Gray has remained largely out of the mainstream spotlight since the early 2000s. So what is she up to today?

Where is Macy Gray Today?

In 2009, she was a contestant on Dancing With the Stars, but was eliminated in the second round. She also guest starred as herself in a 2016 episode of the Full House reboot, Fuller House. In 2021, she ventured across the world for a guest spot on the Australian version of The Masked Singer where she performed as the character of Atlantis.

According to Masked Singer judge Dave Hughes, Gray had a tough time accepting when she was eliminated from the show, so much so that she refused to take off her mask. “Macy Gray had such passion for the Masked Singer Australia that when she was told that she had to leave the show…she refused to leave the show,” Hughes told news.com.au. “She said, ‘No, I’m continuing in the show,’ and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, ‘No, you have to leave’…She was very gracious on air, a real professional. But off air, wanted to stay.”

Gray has had several other film and TV roles over the years. In 2021, she appeared in three films: Dutch, Phobias and Real Talk. In 2023 and 2024, Gray is set to appear in several projects that are currently in pre-production, Sneaks where she’ll provide a voice-over, Forget to Remember, Flycatcher, Dutch II: Nina’s Story (Angel’s Revenge) and Dutch III. She’s also appeared twice on the Bravo series The Real Housewives of Potomac in 2019 and 2021.

On the music front, Gray released her latest album, The Reset, in February 2023 which she recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first single “Every Night” was released in 2022.

“I think the upside of what happened in 2020 was that we all had a chance to re-think things and figure out a way to do things better and think about other things besides work,” Gray expressed on the Tamron Hall Show. “We had to think about ourselves.”
