Willie Nelson might best be known for his long, fruitful career as an outlaw country superstar. However, he’s also well-known for his activism. He’s done everything from founding Farm Aid and helping raise money for family farmers to fighting for environmental sustainability and social justice. In a way, Nelson’s activism is as much a part of his legacy as songs like “Blue Eyed Stranger” or “On The Road Again”.

Farm Aid could arguably be seen as Willie Nelson’s most obvious and beneficial activism efforts. Founded in 1985, the annual benefit concert is still going strong today. Nelson, along with John Mellencamp and Neil Young, were inspired by none other than Bob Dylan to organize a benefit concert in order to help family farmers in the United States. The first concert in Champaign, Illinois pulled in 80,000 concertgoers and raised millions for farmers.
“Family farmers are the backbone of our country,” Nelson once said, and we’re inclined to agree with him.
Willie Nelson’s Activism Started with Farm Aid, But Didn’t Stop There
Willie Nelson’s passion for making the world a better place outside of his music didn’t stop with Farm Aid. He went on to partner with Bob and Kelly King in 2004 to build sustainable biodiesel plants in Oregon and Texas, respectively. The next year, he helped create Willie Nelson Sustainable Biodiesel. That organization aimed to market bio-fuel made from repurposed vegetable oil. Naturally, Nelson was inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame for his sustainability efforts in 2011.
Outside of environmental and farm activism, Nelson has also used his money and influence for other great causes. He’s a pretty well-known animal rights activist, having worked with organizations like the Animal Welfare Institute and the Animal Legal Defense Funds.
He has also been an open supporter of LGBTQ+ marriage in the United States. And, of course, we can’t forget his dedication to legalizing medicinal cannabis use in the United States. Nelson has been the co-chair of the National Organization For The Reform Of Marijuana Laws for years now.
Today, Nelson’s activist efforts are a strong reminder that just one voice, be it that of a famous country crooner or everyday man, can make a difference. If anybody in the country music world is inspiring people to make the world a better place, it’s people like Willie Nelson.
