After joining the roster of Sub Pop Records just over a month ago, singer-songwriter Kyle Craft is gearing up to release his debut album on the iconic indie label. Dolls of Highland – which drops on Apr. 29 – came into being after the end of an eight-year relationship and a sudden move from Craft’s native Shreveport, Louisiana to Portland, Oregon. Get an exclusive listen to the album opener, “Eye of a Hurricane,” below.

“Eye of a Hurricane” starts Dolls with a sudden jolt of energy, courtesy of the song’s ragtime piano lick. The keys continue to drive the track, as the distorted guitar works to add a sense of eeriness to the song. All the while, Craft displays the full prowess of his vocal range, hitting high notes that hark back to glam rock vocals of the ’70s.

“Definitely my favorite track on the album,” Craft tells American Songwriter of his record’s opening number. “All the instruments are walking on their own here, each one doing something different from the next. Lyrically, it’s the combination of infatuation and jealousy, but with the tip of my tongue in my cheek.”

Craft will perform a short string of shows around the release of Dolls of Highland, and a list of dates can be seen below.
