There are certain names, words and phrases within the informal musician’s lexicon that, when heard, elicit certain necessary reactions. For instance, when the venerable Berklee College of Music’s name is attached to a certain artist, it is only natural for any respectable musician to perk his ears. All but one of Eureka Gold’s members attended the music education mecca. Their fifth man, Eli, a studio bassist and who joined the band when Eureka Gold transplanted from Bean Town to Music City, is no slouch either. They count as influences everyone from The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel to The Talking Heads, Beach Boys and Drive-By Truckers. But dropping all these names hardly does their unique brand of Sgt. Pepper-esque flare justice. Guitar and vocalist Jordan Lehning (son of country producer Kyle Lehning) is a virtual renaissance man, acting in and composing the score to his brother’s critically acclaimed indie flick, Make-Out With Violence. Needless to say, the band is brimming with unusual talent that overflows into the incestuous band member-borrowing of the Holly House collective.

Their choice is a dressed-up version of The Kinks rarity, “I Go To Sleep.” The original Ray Davies recording is just piano and vocals, but the Eureka boys add some serious meat to the tune by playing with their full band. Despite being topically depressing, the guys say, “If you were dying… you’d want to listen to this song.” Their full-band approach girds the song with sonic power and makes for a great listen.
