3 Classic Rock Songs With Alleged Creepy Hidden Lyrics

Classic rock songs have historically been the subject of conspiracy theories. Plenty of rock songs from back in the day have allegedly boasted hidden, evil lyrics when played backwards. Others have been analyzed time and time again, with many listeners pointing toward creepy hidden meanings in such songs’ lyrics. Let’s look at just a few songs that have allegedly creepy hidden lyrics, some of which aren’t exactly well-hidden.

“Fire On High” by Electric Light Orchestra

If you’re surprised to see ELO on this list, you’re not alone. I’ve listened to “Fire On High” many times and find it as far from creepy as it could possibly be. However, according to some fans, there is something dark hidden in the song’s recording.

When played backwards, you can clearly hear the words “Music is reversible, but time is not / Turn back, turn back, turn back.” It’s pretty obvious that ELO put that in on purpose. Many fans have determined that the hidden lyrics are simply a cautionary statement about how time tends to slip through our fingers faster than we’d like. Others think the lyrics hold a more sinister meaning. Either way, I think it’s kind of a cool little Easter egg.

“Darling Nikki” by Prince

The lyrics of “Darling Nikki” by Prince are some of the horniest in classic rock history. Few would debate that. However, there is a part of the song that some listeners might have missed, and many listeners think this part of the song is quite creepy.

The bulk of the song is about a raunchy night with a woman named Nikki. At the end of the song, an oddly-placed choir sings words that don’t make much sense. But when played backwards, the lyrics are about as clear as day: “Hello, how are you? / Fine, fine, cause I know that the Lord is coming soon.” A very odd religious and apocalyptic reference to put into a song about kinky activities.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana

Nirvana’s most famous song is yet another entry on our list of classic rock songs that allegedly boast secret spooky lyrics. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was the grunge band’s biggest hit, and the song allegedly hides a few backmasked words in the song, played over one another. When played backwards, one set of lyrics says “John Dillinger died for you.” The other track is unintelligible, and some listeners think it’s a Satanic message. I’ll let you come to your own conclusion on that one.
