3 Country Songs From 1992 That Should Come With an Emotional Warning

Country music in the 1990s became known for its strong emotional content. So many great country songs that packed an emotional punch came out in the decade, including these three songs. All out in 1992, each of them should come with an emotional warning attached.

“I Still Believe in You” by Vince Gill

Vince Gillโ€™s โ€œI Still Believe In Youโ€ is a declaration of commitment, regardless of how challenging life becomes. Gill wrote โ€œI Still Believe In Youโ€ with John Barlow Jarvis. The song is the title track of his fifth studio album.

โ€œI Still Believe In Youโ€ says, โ€œI still believe in you / With a love that will always be / Standing so strong and true / Baby, I still believe in you and me.”

Gill wrote โ€œI Still Believe In Youโ€ as a message to his wife, Janis Oliver, who was upset with him because he scheduled a writing appointment with Jarvis instead of spending time with her. The couple divorced in 1997.

“Somewhere Other Than The Night” by Garth Brooks

Garth Brooks includes โ€œSomewhere Other Than The Nightโ€ on his album The Chase. Brooks wrote โ€œSomewhere Other Than The Nightโ€ with Kent Blazy.

โ€œSomewhere Other Than The Nightโ€ is a sweet love story about a hard-working man who realizes that he needs to prioritize his wife more. The song says, โ€œSomewhere other than the night / She needs to hear I love you / Somewhere other than the night / She needs to know you care.”

“What it was all about was taking time from your busy schedule to show somebody you love them,” Brooks explains. “It could be your child, it could be your pet. It could be anything. Just take that time, put that pen down, close that laptop. Go take a walk with your buddy.”

“The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia”

Talk about a song of suspense. Reba McEntire takes listeners on a sordid tale of infidelity and murder, only to reveal at the end that the person singing the song actually did the killing. โ€œThe Night The Lights Went Out In Georgiaโ€ was written by Bobby Russell. It was first released by his then-wife, Vicki Lawrence, in 1972. 20 years later, McEntire released the same song as part of her For My Broken Heart album.

The chorus of โ€œThe Night The Lights Went Out In Georgiaโ€ says, โ€œThat’s the night the lights went out in Georgia / That’s the night that they hung an innocent man / Well, don’t trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer / Cause the judge in the town’s got bloodstains on his hands.”

Tanay Tucker also recorded a different version of โ€œThatโ€™s The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgiaโ€. Tuckerโ€™s take on this song is part of the soundtrack for a film of the same name, based on this song, starring Kristy McNichol and Dennis Quaid.
