“Just Like Heaven” is one of The Cure’s most well-known gothic rock love songs. It’s an incredible little track, so it makes perfect sense why so many of The Cure’s contemporaries have performed their own covers of the song. Let’s take a look at just a handful of our favorite “Just Like Heaven” covers to date!
Videos by American Songwriter
1. Beatsteaks
“Just Like Heaven” was very much a product of the late 1980s, and it’s surprising to hear a more modern rendition taken on so carefully in such a wildly different genre. German punk outfit Beatsteaks debuted their cover of the iconic Cure song in 2002.
It’s a solid cover and not the only one to make it to their Die Wohnzimmer EP. They also covered the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Cheap Trick, among others, quite beautifully.
2. The Watson Twins
Out of all the “Just Like Heaven” covers on this list, there’s something special about The Watson Twins’ 2008 rendition of the song. It’s very much a Midwestern rendition of a very British song. The twins’ version is a sweet, gentle, and notably different approach to the gothic rock love song, and it’s hard not to love it. If this cover sounds familiar, you probably heard it on the True Blood soundtrack.
3. Dinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Jr. could probably cover anything and make it sound unique. This famed alt-rock outfit covered “Just Like Heaven” back in 1989, and it sounds wildly different from the original. Yet, it just seems to hit right.
This version is heavier, grungier, and rooted in noise rock over gothic rock. J. Mascis’ vocals are fantastic on this cover. “Just Like Heaven” was featured on the band’s third album Bug, which ended up charting quite well in the UK due to the inclusion of the famed cover.
4. Katie Melua
Back in 2005, Georgian-English singer/songwriter Katie Melua debuted one of the best “Just Like Heaven” covers one could hope for. Her sound has always been rooted in jazz and the blues, and her voice has always been arrestingly powerful. Oddly enough, that was the perfect recipe for a Cure cover.
Melua’s rendition of the famed 1987 gothic rock love song was featured on her critically acclaimed album Piece By Piece.
