4 of the Most Unlikely Career Resurgences of Rock Bands

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd has fought on even in the wake of massive loss. The band had to mourn several key members early on in their career. It took a decade, but the band eventually reformed and has continued on ever since. It is certainly a testament to the resilience of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy.

Mama told me when I was young
“Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it’ll help you
Some sunny day”

2. The Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band’s history has been a tangled web of success. Like Lynyrd Skynyrd they have suffered losses of band members that have called into question their future. Over the decades they have enjoyed several resurgence–to varying levels of success. Their latest iteration–though with auxiliary members helping to fill out their lineup–seems to have staying power.

I’ve been run down and I’ve been lied to.
And I don’t know why, I let that mean woman make me a fool.
She took all my money, wrecks my new car.
Now she’s with one of my good time buddies,
They’re drinkin’ in some cross-town bar.

3. Eagles

The internal fighting within the Eagles was some of the worst in music history. Them coming back together seems extremely unlikely, if not impossible. So, when they did decide to try things again in 1994, they proved a ton of fans wrong. Their second life as a band has proven to be enduring.

Take it easy, take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don’t even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
Take it easy

4. Aerosmith

By the ’80s, it seemed like Aerosmith were on their way out. A younger generation of rockers had taken their once iron clad throne. That transfer of power mixed with their internal struggles with substances counted them out in many rock fans’ minds. That all changed when Run D.M.C. decided to give the band a leg up by way of their famed cover of “Walk This Way.” Though rap was an unlikely avenue for the return of Aerosmith, it certainly paved their way.

Seesaw swingin’ with the boys in the school
And your feet flyin’ up in the air
Singing, hey diddle diddle
With your kitty in the middle
Of the swing like you didn’t care
