1. ‘Pigeonhole’ by New Fast Automatic Daffodils

Manchester birthed quite a few amazing rock acts in the 1980s and 1990s, from New Order to Oasis. The Britpop movement further boosted many of those memorable bands, but it also caused them to outshine some very noteworthy acts that should have gotten more famous.

New Fast Automatic Daffodils is one such act, and their debut record Pigeonhole is an amazing Madchester dance-rock release that deserved more attention when it was released in 1990.

2. ‘Steady Diet Of Nothing’ by Fugazi

One might not consider the post-hardcore outfit Fugazi to be underrated. However, it’s pretty fair to say that Steady Diet Of Nothing is one of the most underrated rock albums of the 1990s.

This killer piece of work from 1991 was the band’s second album and the first that the band mixed themselves. The production is nothing short of chaotic, which might be a point of criticism for some. Honestly, I think it makes the record so much more unique.

3. ‘A Storm In Heaven’ by The Verve

What would this list of underrated rock albums from the 1990s be without mentioning The Verve? They were fairly loved during the Britpop movement in the mid-1990s, but The Verve doesn’t get enough credit for how good A Storm In Heaven Is.

It’s an incredible debut, and a great example of what a band can make when they aren’t hyperfocused on putting out charting hits.

4. ‘Honey’s Dead’ by Jesus And The Mary Chain

The Jesus And Mary Chain are one of the most underrated rock acts ever, and Honey’s Dead is by far one of the most underrated albums of the 1990s.

Released 1992, this excellent noise rock record was ahead of its time and one of the most original records to come out of that era of alt-rock. If you like a bit of dance with your shoegaze, this is the record to check out.
