Zach Top Joins Forces with Drew Baldridge and Craig Campbell to Sing a Ronnie Milsap Classic

Last Wednesday (December 11), Zach Top, Drew Baldridge, Craig Campbell, and Anne Wilson were in North Carolina for the QDR 94.7 Acoustic Christmas for the Kids. The holiday concert raises money for the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. The artists brought Christmas magic to the crowd. However, they made magic with a heartbreak ballad before taking the stage.

In the video below, Campbell sits at a piano in the Clayton Center green room and begins to play the intro to Ronnie Milsap’s hit “Stranger Things Have Happened.” Top walks into the room, and instantly recognizes the tune. “Oh yeah!” he exclaimed. Without prompting, the trio began to sing the song together, harmonizing as they did.

Zach Top, Drew Baldridge, and Craig Campbell Cover a ‘90s Classic

Roger Murrah and Keith Stegall co-wrote “Stranger Things Have Happened” and Ronnie Milsap recorded it. Milsap released it in 1990 as the fourth single and title track from his 1989 album. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

“Stranger Things Have Happened” was the first single Milsap released in the ‘90s. It was also his highest-charting song of the decade. It’s a classic heartbreak ballad about a man who is missing the one that got away. The song’s lyrics see the narrator talking to photos of his lost love and imagining that she came back to him. In the chorus, he reveals that he’s still holding out hope. Stranger things have happened / And I’ll always believe / If stranger things can happen / You could still come back to me.

Top Is Bringing Back Traditional Country Music

It’s no surprise that Zach Top instantly knew what Craig Campbell was playing on the piano. He’s a student of ‘90s country and the artists that inspired the stars of the era.

More importantly, the Washington native is one of a handful of mainstream country stars who are bringing back traditional-sounding country music. His 2024 album Cold Beer & Country Music is a testament to his throwback sound.
