Carrie Underwood Singing This 1976 Classic With Lindsey Buckingham on Guitar Is as Good a Fleetwood Mac Cover as You’ll Ever Hear

Over the decades, there have been more than a few memorable duets or collaborations. There was the time Nelly teamed up with Tim McGraw for “Over and Over.” Or how about Kenny Rogers joining forces with Dolly Parton on “Islands in the Stream?” That is just a sample – Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” And adding their names to memorable collaborations, Carrie Underwood once took the stage with Lindsey Buckingham for a performance of “Go Your Own Way” that still has fans talking.

The year was 2007, and Underwood was expected to attend and perform at Fashion Rocks. Buckingham also walked the red carpet at the event. But when it came time to perform “Go Your Own Way,” Underwood started the song off alone. That quickly changed as she introduced the famed musician, causing the audience to erupt in cheers.

While fans continuously praised the performance, Underwood received a special highlight when Buckingham shared the performance back in 2023. Just like fans, it seemed that the musician couldn’t help but revisit the classic moment where country and rock converged for what turned out to be one of those rare moments that just worked. Different genres, different styles, but somehow it all came together on one stage.

The Painful History That Led To Carrie Underwood’s Cover Of “Go Your Own Way”

As for the history of “Go Your Own Way”, the hit song was written and performed by Buckingham. When released, it marked the first song from Fleetwood Mac to break into the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Adding to the success of the timeless album Rumours, “Go Your Own Way” was fueled by the strained love between Buckingham and Nicks. Having a difficult time working alongside Nicks after the two split, the musician poured those emotions into the song that made Nicks want to “kill him.”

Once discussing the lyrics behind “Go Your Own Way”, Nicks admitted, “I very much resented him telling the world that ‘packing up, shacking up’ with different men was all I wanted to do. He knew it wasn’t true. It was just an angry thing that he said.”

Doing her best to look past the lyrics, the words continued to sting. “Every time those words would come onstage, I wanted to go over and kill him. He knew it, so he really pushed my buttons through that. It was like, ‘I’ll make you suffer for leaving me.’ And I did.”

In a way, that’s what makes moments like that 2007 performance stand out even more. A song born out of heartbreak and suffering somehow turned into a hit song that continues to resonate with generations.
