Much like the Tarheel state she calls home, Katie Basden’s music is a polyglot of styles, combining country, soul, rock and blues into an enticing blend of southern American music. Her new album Release The Sound was a project two years in the making, honed mostly during the years she spent in Nashville as a budding songwriter. Stream the album in its entirety below, and read what Basden had to say about its long gestation process.

Release The Sound has been a back and forth battle of when to release, how to release … I can’t really believe it’s actually here, but it is. This album is filled with the raw, the ugly, the beautiful, and the truth. My songwriting doesn’t lend itself to storytelling. It’s truth-telling. This whole album is filled with moments that really happened and characters that still exist. Writing this album and crawling uphill for its release has made me realize how important struggle can be for your character.

Naturally, I’m guarded and sassy. Good luck catching me crying about anything. The voice on Release The Sound is a completely different version of myself. She’s someone who values the vulnerability in honesty more than anything else. The depths of darkness that can only be felt when your ex starts dating someone new? When you’re losing faith and all hope seems lost? She’ll take you there. On the other hand, there’s a thick layer of sass across the entire record. It can’t be missed.”
