American Music Awards: Kendrick Lamar Eyeing Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston’s Record, Trio of Country Stars Vying for Artist of the Year

2025 has so far been a banner year for Kendrick Lamar, starting with February’s Grammy Awards. The Compton-born rapper took home five trophies at this year’s Grammy Awards for his Drake diss track “Not Like Us.” Just one week later, he again got the whole world talkin’ with his viral headlining Super Bowl Halftime Show performance. Now the American Music Awards have announced this year’s nominations, and Kendrick Lamar is leading the way with 10 nominations.

Kendrick Lamar Could Tie These Legends at the American Music Awards

With just three American Music Award trophies to his name so far, Kendrick Lamar has a shot at quadrupling that amount this year. The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist nabbed 10 nominations across eight categories. He’s up for Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Favorite Hip-Hop Song. Lamar scored three nods in the latter category, for “Not Like Us,” “Like That” with Future and Metro Boomin, and the SZA collab “Luther.”

Additionally, “Not Like Us” was recognized in the Song of the Year and Favorite Music Video categories. “Luther” is also up for Collaboration of the Year, and Lamar’s 2024 album, GNX, could take home both Album of the Year and Favorite Hip-Hop Album.

If the “Alright” rapper takes home a trophy in each of the eight categories he is nominated in, Lamar will tie Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston for the most awards in a single year.

Country Stars Headline Artist of the Year Nominations

After Kendrick Lamar, rapper-turned-country-hitmaker Post Malone is the second most-nominated artist at the 2025 American Music Awards. The Coachella headliner has eight nominations, followed by a three-way tie between Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan and Shaboozey, with seven each.

Notably, six artists came away with eight nods, including Taylor Swift (“the winningest artist in AMA history)” Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter and SZA.

Malone, Wallen, and Zach Bryan are among the 10 nominations for Artist of the Year.

On Monday, May 26, Jennifer Lopez will host the AMA Ceremony live from Las Vegas beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. Viewers can watch on CBS or stream on Paramount+.

Currently, you can vote for your favorite artist at VoteAMAs.com until 11:59 p.m. Pacific (or 2:59 a.m. Eastern) on Thursday, May 15.
