The celebration of Dylan’s career will begin with a broadcast of the documentary film Bob Dylan: No Direction Home. That film was released in 2005 and was directed by Martin Scorsese. Scorsese’s documentary explores the period in which Dylan arrived in New York City in early 1961, all the way to his short retirement in 1966 following a motorcycle accident.
After that documentary is aired, BBC4 will also air Bob Dylan: Shadow Kingdom. This live concert film was recorded in 2021 in California after Dylan’s Never Ending Tour was scrapped due to the pandemic. This concert film has become a bit of a fan favorite, notably for its nostalgia and offerings of deep cuts from Dylan’s 1960s and 1970s releases.
The full schedule of Bob Dylan honors that will air on BBC4 can be found on BBC4’s website.
People Are Buzzing About Bob Dylan’s Biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’
The film, which will star actor Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, will explore the legendary’s musicians controversial move from acoustic folk music to electric guitar-based music. The film is set in the mid-1960s. A Complete Unknown will be released on January 17 in the UK and Christmas Day in the US.
Fans are already hailing Chalamet’s performance of Dylan. According to the actor, he learned to play around 30 different songs by Dylan to prepare for the film. He also took vocal, harmonica, and guitar lessons to properly perform as Dylan. Don’t expect any overdubs in this film; Chalamet does all the singing, playing, and general Bob Dylan mannerisms on his own. Reviews have already been quite glittering in Chalamet’s favor.
Bob Dylan is apparently a fan, too. Recently, he praised Chalamet for his performance in the film.
“Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me,” said Dylan. “Or a younger me. Or some other me.”
“Floored,” Chalamet responded. “I am so grateful. Thank you Bob.”
